Āwheto - Womens Crop Tee
Āwheto, kauri, bone - things that we can burn to make black ink.
Āwheto is a native fungi that turns caterpillars into mummies by trapping them in an underground grave before emerging out of their neck to begin the cycle again. Our Tūpuna developed processes to turn Āwheto into tā moko ink - a deep black, tapped under the skin. Aren't our customary practices goth AF?
Oh yeah, we also make a Māori black ink by burning kāpia, the resin from Kauri trees and catching the soot. The ingenuity of it all!
